Nevis Nice Rental Cars!

In our last few weeks on the island, it started to feel like Nevis was going the extra mile to make sure that we didn't forget our time there.

Things started out on a high when we were able to sell our car! A native man contacted us and said he wanted it, and even offered to pay us the full asking price. The only inconvenient part was that he needed the car right away, which meant we'd have to rent a car for our last three weeks. But honestly, we were so thankful to just get our poor clunker sold that we didn't mind.

We ended up getting a rental from a guy named Claude, who rents vehicles to a lot of the students at MUA. Based on our rental experience when we first got to the island, our expectations weren't high... we just needed something to get us around for 3 weeks and Claude's collection of junkers looked like they could do it. When Adam picked up our rental and brought it home I thought, "wow, we got a nice one!" It was so shiny and nice looking. But when I got in it to ride, I laughed. Everything shook and rattled and moaned and groaned. I'm positive the car was 90% bondo, and on close inspection we noticed that the hood was tied to the front license plate with a small piece of rope to keep it closed... Nevis Nice! In the three weeks we drove that fancy car, it broke down three times. But every time Claude came to my rescue with a replacement junker to drive for a few days while he got ours fixed.

On our last day, we got in the car and headed to Adam's white coat ceremony. About half way to the school, while we were driving along at a high speed of about 35mph, the little rope holding the hood closed suddenly came undone and the hood flew up and then completely OFF the car!! We both just stared at each other in complete shock for a second! Then we turned around and went back to find our hood in the bushes. Adam just kept repeating over and over "you have got to be kidding me!" Apparently when we first noticed the hood was tied to the license plate to hold it closed, we failed to notice that that was also the ONLY thing holding it on the car at all! The was too big to fit anywhere but the back seat, so we slid it in there, but then discovered that the door wouldn't close. So, I hung my pregnant self out the window to hold the hood and the door while Adam drove very slowly on down the road to Claude's, which thankfully wasn't far. We were quite the sight!

Claude met us in the yard and asked what happened, and after Adam explained the whole thing his only response was, "Oh man, that must have been scary!" Seriously?! And then without missing a beat, he tossed us the keys to another junker on the lot and sent us on our way, and we made it to the white coat ceremony with about 2 minutes to spare!  I couldn't help but wonder if that wasn't the first time something like that had happened with one of his rentals?

In reality, the whole experience was the perfect end to our entire Nevis adventure. Definitely one that we can remember and laugh about forever. So thank you Nevis, and Claude, and your junky rental cars, for the awesome memory of our last day on the island!
