We had the best Sunday meeting today! Our first Sunday here on the island we didn't have church, because we still hadn't been able to get in contact with any other members here. There is a Branch of the church on St Kitts, but only a small "group" (made up of a few students mostly) that meets here on Nevis. By the second Sunday we'd made contact with John, another student here, and met with him at his house, which happens to only be about 50 yards down the road from our house! It was a short little meeting with just the three of us. Last Sunday a couple more students were back from break so there were five of us. And today a few members came over from St Kitts to meet with us, and brought our numbers up to twelve!
I got chills as we sang together. There was even some harmonizing going on! We didn't sound too shabby! :) We had a short sacrament meeting with messages from Sister Hymas (her husband is currently serving as a counselor in the mission presidency, and he attended church in St Kitts today) and Brother Vasquez who is the second counselor in the branch presidency in St Kitts. Then we sang a couple more hymns and called it church!
Here is a picture of our church group today. From L to R: John Makoni (second semester student, from SLC), Sister Hadlock (missionary couple assigned to St Kitts currently, from Utah, Elder Hadlock was taking the picture), Dan (4th semester student), Amparo (originally from the Dominican Republic but has lived here in Nevis for about a year), Adam (handsome as ever), Me (gotta love what humidity does for a hairdo), Jamie Plante (5th semester student, from Utah), Brother Aaron Vasquez (second counselor in St Kitts branch presidency, 3rd semester med student in St Kitts, from Utah), Jake Landvatter(4th semester student, from Utah) and his girlfriend Marsha (3rd semester student, from Canada). Sister Hymas was also taking pictures, so she's not in the shot.
Every week our meetings are short and sweet, but the spirit is always strong. I'm so grateful for the gospel! And I'm grateful to know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is true... everywhere... even in a small living room in Nevis.
Raelynn ask Amparo what part of the Dominican Republic he's from. I probably knew his parents when I was serving my mission there.
ReplyDeleteHey Raelynn, fun to read about your small little gathering. Actually, I'm with you, the Spirit can be with the faithful no matter where they are or how small a group. You both look great, so you must be thriving on life on the island!
ReplyDeleteAunt Rea
you make us jealous! It sounds like, looks like, feels like paradise!
ReplyDeleteLucky you!
