I'm official! I got my driver's license this week, so I can now legally venture out around the island. The process was pretty simple, we just had to go to a police station, show them my US license, pay some money, and they gave me a Nevis license.
We're still driving a rental car. We're hoping to find a car to buy, but in the mean time these are our wheels for the month:
Yes, it's all backwards! I'm still getting used to driving on the wrong side of the road, on the wrong side of the car. I still reach to put the car in gear with my right hand, every time. I laughed at Adam the first few times he tried to turn the blinker on and the windshield wipers came on instead, but I've done it several times now too. It's weird to have to retrain your brain!
You see all kinds of fun things while you're driving around the island. I wish I could take pictures of all of them, but it's not really safe to snap pictures and concentrate on staying on the LEFT at the same time. I'm just not that pro yet. :)
There are road signs like this all around the island:
But there are no signs for these:
There are sheep and goats everywhere. On the roads, in yards, at the park, at the airport, etc... They seem to just roam where they please. I passed a whole bunch a couple days ago that were running down the road, but they were running down the correct side of the road! Even the sheep know to stay on the LEFT! And, I'm pretty sure I saw one look both ways before crossing the street as I passed by.
If you aren't dodging wildlife while driving around the island, you'd better be dodging the potholes! There are some that are so big it's possible you may lose car parts down in them if you hit them. Adam is a pro at dodging them, and only hits a few little ones here and there. I, on the other hand, am pretty much a pro at hitting them... just about every single one of them! And every time I hit one I can hear my dad saying, "leave a few for on the way back!" :) I'll get better, I'm sure. I barely got my license this week, and I'm still concentrating on STAYING ON THE LEFT! Wish me luck!
Cool! Now you just have to remember to drive on the right side anytime you come home to visit crazy backwards America.
